Indian Road Congress

As per the recommendation made by the jayakar committee, a semi government technical body was formed in 1934 to provide a platform for regular sharing of ideas and experience on all matters related to planning, construction and maintenance of roads in India. This body was named as India Road Congress . It works in close collaboration with roads wing of the Ministry of Shipping and Transpor, Government of India. It is now an active body of national importance controlling standardisation of specifications as regards material, design and construction of roads. 


Function of I.R.C.

1) To collect information and literature on roads and make it available for use in the country.

2) To recommend standard specifications for road material, design and construction techniques.

3) To publish journals, research publications standard specifications and other guidelines on various aspects of highway engineering.

4) To provide a platform for the expression of professional opinion on all matters related to Highway Engineering.

 The highway Research Board of IRC was set up in 1973 to give proper direction and guidance to road research activities in india. The main objectives of IRC Highway Research Board are:

a) To determine the nature and extent of research.

b) To channelise consultative services on roads research.
