 IRC CLASSIFICATION OF ROAD 

                                                          IRC classifies the network of roads in india into following categories

1) National highways ( NH )

2) State Highway ( SH )

3) Major District Roads ( MDR )

4) Others District Roads ( ODR )

5) Village Roads ( VR ) 

1) National highways 

                                        National highways were defined as the important roads running through the length and breadth of India connecting ports capital cities, foreign Highway, industrial centre and strategic point . National highways should have 2 lanes of traffic and should be 7.50 m wide . It should be necessary a bituminous or concrete road giving an uninterrupted road communication throughout India and should connect the entire road network . All the national highway are assigned the respective numbers. 


2) State Highway ( SH ) 

                                           State Highway were defined as the main trunk or areterial roadsof a State connecting national highway of adjacent states, district headquarters and important towns within the State. State Highway should preferably be 7.50 m wide and where it is only 3.80 m wide it should have 2.0 m wide graval shoulder on each side to support the carriage way. Milestones in case of State Highway are painted in green top and white base. They are also of bituminous material or cement concrete type roads.


3) Major District Roads ( MDR ) 

                                                         The important district roads which connects district headquarters production and markets center with either a State Highway or a railway station are termed as major district roads.

 

4) Others District Roads (ODR )

                                                     The roads within a district which connect rural areas of production with market , educational center and major district roads are termed as other districts roads. They are mostly meant for serving population living in rural areas. These roads have single lane width of atleast 3.8 m of stablosed soil or compacted gravel . 


5) Village Roads ( VR )

                                        The roads connecting village of group of village with each other and to the nearest district roads or railway centres are termed as village roads. As these are village arteries they should not be neglected but must be planned well to form a regulated system of transportation. They are basically farm tracks or earthen roads serving rural population .
